Spring 2-Fabulous Facts

Science- investigating pitch

In Science we have been looking at sound. We have looked at the parts of the ear and how it works. Then we investigated pitch by creating some panpipes using straws. Then we tried to compose a song with them. We found out the straws were a little small to get a good tune out of them but you could definitely hear the difference in pitch.

Tudor Roses

We crossed lolly sticks and then weaved the Tudor Roses. They look really effective on our Tudor display.

Henry VIII monochrome portraits

We looked at portraits of Henry VIII. We traced on the back of an image with graphite. We then traced on top of a plain piece of paper with a pencil to create an outline of Henry. We started painting with white and then continued to add a little blue each time to create the differing tones of blue within the picture.

Year 4 Spring Term 2020

We welcome you back after the Christmas holidays and wish you a happy new year.

During the spring we will be looking into the topic of The Tudors. We will be looking into the life of Henry VIII and his wives. We will be taking a trip to Fountains Abbey near Ripon to look closely at the Dissolution of the Monasteries next half term. In English we will be looking at stories linked to the Tudors. We will be looking closely at The Thief, The Fool and the Big Fat King by Terry Deary. We will also be looking into non-fiction texts around this topic.

In Maths we will be looking at fractions and all things related.  We will be having a big push on times tables this term. In June all pupils in Year 4 will have to complete the Multiplication Times table check  so we need to make sure pupils are practising at home as well. All pupils are expected to know all their times tables up to 12.

Our RE topic this term is Jesus the Teacher. Here we will look into the life of Jesus and how he went about his mission of teaching the word of God.

During the term our Science topic is sound.

Things you could do at home

English

  • Please read with your child as regularly as possible, a minimum of 3 times a week. Daily if possible.
  • When reading, check for meaning and understanding.
  • New spellings will be given every Tuesday, for a test on Friday.

Maths

  • Practise times tables on a regular basis. Your child should know all their times tables up to 12.

Fabulous facts will be sent out early in the term. These need to be placed somewhere prominent in the home so you can refer to the vocabulary and discuss the subject matter with your child.

Any additional work can be done at home for a family point. There are some great treats for 25, 50 and 100 points.

P.E kit needs to be in school at all times. P.E is on a Thursday.

If you have any questions about the topics we will be covering or want to know what else you could do to support your child them please don’t hesitate to ask.

Tropical Day in Year 4

To enhance our rainforest theme for the term, we had a special Tropical day in class. We had worked hard previously to plan a suitable vessel for the Amazonian creatures to get across the Amazon river. Some children brought materials in from home and some used what resources we had in class. Children adapted their plans as they went on. Lots of children helped one another to get to the end goal. Everyone produced something. Some did get a little more wet than others. We also had a special tropical themed lunch table.

We will remember them.

We looked at poppy fields in Flanders and tried to recreate them with oil pastels.
