History

                                                                                                              "Achieving Together in God's Love"

INTENT

As a School of Creativity and Opportunity, we endeavour to provide a history curriculum that allow our pupils to develop important skills in follow lines of enquiry; think critically; decide upon the reliability of evidence; and to form their own judgements.

At Our Lady of Victories, we want all of our children to develop a love of History. We aim to provide our children with a wealth of interesting and diverse opportunities to not only stimulate their interest in but deepen their understanding about the lives of the people who came before us. We want all of our children to understand how History is more than the path left by the past; it influences the present and can shape the future.

We aim for our children to understand key concepts such as cause and effect, change and continuity, the significance of events and the ability to compare and contrast between the present day and the era they are studying. As a School of Confidence, we also aim for our children to develop a secure understanding of key historical terminology which they can build upon over time.

We strive to provide our children with an awareness of important figures both at home and abroad. We want all of our pupils to understand how the United Kingdom has developed over time and significant events that have helped shape it as a country to help further their understanding of our place in the world today, whilst also learning about aspects of local and Ancient History to provide them with a wider awareness and greater appreciation of the past.

As a school of love and opportunity, we believe that all learning should be adapted to the needs of all children (SEN, EAL, more able, disadvantaged) and that the curriculum should be carefully planned to take account of everyone in the class so that all can succeed.

IMPLEMENTATION

At Our Lady of Victories, our History curriculum follows the National Curriculum which has been broken down to ensure both progression and a breadth of coverage across Key Stage 1 and 2.

The History programme of study at Our Lady of Victories Catholic Primary follows the National Curriculum which has been broken down to ensure both progression and coverage across Key Stage 1 and 2.

The teaching, learning and sequencing of our History Curriculum follows:

  • A progression of skills with each year group, which enables pupils to build on and develop their skills each year
  • Each theme will be taught explicitly through a range of interesting topics, including links to other areas of the curriculum and our whole school vision.
  • History is taught as a termly topic, following a line of enquiry whilst also focusing on the knowledge and skills stated in the National Curriculum to allow the children to build an in-depth knowledge about a specific period in history, or understand how an aspect of life has changed over time.
  • A teaching sequence that builds knowledge and skills and concludes with a reflection and assessment of that knowledge.
  • In Early Years, we introduce the children to the concept of time and the ability to sequence events over a short period of time.
  • In Key Stage 1, our History Curriculum starts begins by looking at the children’s own personal history before introducing them to significant people and events.
  • In Key Stage 1, History lessons will focus on significant events and people who have shaped society, both locally and nationally.
  • Across Key Stage 2, we study a range of topics of local and national level. We also start to study events from the Ancient world.
  • In Key Stage 2, British history is taught chronologically to allow our children to understand their position on the timeline and how it shaped our development as a country.
  • Regular assessment of prior learning through checkpoint challenges to check that the children know more and remember more.
  • CPD to ensure that teachers’ subject knowledge and skills are up to date to allow them to teach with confidence..

Our History Curriculum provides children with the key historical skills needed for them to achieve their full potential and to inspire them to become the next generation of historians.

At Our Lady of Victories, our vision is for school to be the best days of our children’s lives. To that end, we provide our children with the opportunity to take part in a variety of opportunities and experiences to develop their historical skills in real life situations. We make good use of the local area whilst also organising visits to places of importance both in the United Kingdom and abroad.

IMPACT

By the end of Year 6, we want our children to:

  • Have a secure knowledge and understanding of the significant people and key events from the historical periods studied
  • Have the ability to think critically about history and to confidently communicate their views.
  • Have the ability to evaluate and challenge their own and other people’s points of view using accurate historical evidence from a range of sources.
  • Have a passion for history and to be actively engaged in the learning with a sense of curiosity about the past and understanding of how and why it can be interpreted in different ways.
  • To make links between Historical events at a local, national and global level.
  • To have a secure long term knowledge of the topics they have studied.
  • To be prepared for the next part of their learning journey.
  • To know that those who do not learn from the past are destined to repeat it.
