Geography

"Achieiving Together in God's Love"

Intent

At Our Lady of Victories School we believe that Geography helps to provoke and provide answers to questions about the natural and human aspects of the world. Children are encouraged to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, as well as their place in it. As a School of Virtues, geography curriculum enables children to develop knowledge and skills that are transferable to other curriculum areas and which can and are used to promote their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Geography is, by nature, an investigative subject, which develops and understanding of concepts, knowledge and skills. We seek to inspire in children a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people which will remain with them for the rest of their lives; to promote the children’s  interest and understanding of diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. The curriculum is designed to develop knowledge and skills that are progressive, as well as transferable, throughout their time at Our Lady of Victories and also to their further education and beyond.

As a School of Love and Opportunity, we believe that all learning should be adapted to the needs of all children (SEN, EAL, more able, disadvantaged) and that the curriculum should be carefully planned to take account of everyone in the class so that all can succeed.

Implementation

Geography is generally taught in a thematic way throughout the year, so that children can achieve depth in their learning while linking it to other concepts. Teachers have identified the key knowledge and skills of each topic and consideration has been given to ensure progression across topics throughout each year group across the school. As a School of Community, the local area is fully utilised to achieve the desired outcomes, with extensive opportunities for learning outside the classroom embedded in practice.

Impact

By the end of their primary education at Our Lady of Victories, our learners will have gained a rich body of geographical knowledge and a wide range of transferable skills, which they can apply to other subjects and contexts. We assess on an regular basis in order to build a rounded picture of each child as a geographer, using practical opportunities, checkpoint challenges and discussions. This enables teachers to set appropriate, next steps and challenge children in their thinking and learning. We aspire  for children to leave Our Lady of Victories being able to debate and discuss geographical issues and to be able to reflect and form their own opinions on matters such as climate change and natural disasters. We measure our impact based on pupils’ confidence to ask and explore questions to further their own geographical knowledge and understanding. As a School of Adventure, we will provide learners to be inquisitive young learners who choose to understand global environmental issues and seek to make a personal difference in protecting and shaping the world we share. Regular school trips provide further relevant and contextual learning.
